PAD Manifesto
One of the factors in deciding who the best candidates
for animals were at the 2005 General Election was the extent of
their support for six specific measures that PAD set out in a mini-manifesto
and sent to candidates in the form of a questionnaire.
In order to develop an effective mini-manifesto, PAD looked at
issues that are likely to be on the political agenda after the 2005
General Election, and that are being pushed by animal protection
organisations. We also focused on how we can democratise the decision-making
process that affect animals - for example, the proposal to set up
a new Animal Protection Commission in Government that would entail,
for example, the abolition of the biased and discredited Home Office
Inspectorate for animal experiments. PAD is continuing to campaign
and lobby on these six proposals during the new Parliament.
So the PAD strategy involves trying to achieve the reforms that
are being blocked by vested interests, but for which there is widespread
public support already, while trying to lay the groundwork for further
progress. This is a thoroughly researched, ambitious yet achievable
programme that complements and reinforces other groups' work, all
within a democratic framework.
